Scan to BIM for ahead of its conversion to a college campus

The David W. Dyer Federal Building and United States Courthouse, a 1933 Mediterranean and Renaissance Revival landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is being converted into a 162,250 square foot Miami Dade College educational facility, and the project team needed a precise measured model before design work could begin.

Project overview

Turning a historic federal courthouse into a college campus

The David W. Dyer Federal Building and United States Courthouse, a 1933 Mediterranean and Renaissance Revival landmark faced in Keystone limestone with Corinthian columns and listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1983, is being converted into a 162,250 square foot Miami Dade College educational facility, and the design team needed a precise measured model of the historic building before classroom, library and office layouts could be planned.

We laser scanned the full building, capturing its limestone facade, Corinthian colonnades and historic interior spaces, then modeled the structure to support the college conversion of the building into classrooms, event spaces, libraries and offices while preserving the architectural character that earned its historic listing.

At 162,250 square feet, the building conversion needed to reconcile modern educational space planning with a protected historic structure, and the model gave the design team a verified base to test classroom, library and office layouts against the real building rather than an assumed one.

This project was delivered through our heritage BIM modeling service. See more education and heritage and culture work on our industry pages.

Business impact

A protected landmark repurposed without losing its character

The measured model let the Miami Dade College design team plan a full educational conversion of a protected historic landmark with confidence, reducing the risk of a preservation review conflict later in the design process by working from verified as built data from day one.

Educational space planning grounded in a verified as built model

Historic Keystone limestone facade and colonnades fully documented

Preservation review risk reduced by working from measured data early

“We needed a building that could carry both a preservation review and a full academic space program. This model did both.”
