Scan to BIM Execution for Data Center
Scan to BIM Solutions recently completed a Scan to BIM project for a large data center. The goal was to create a highly accurate 3D model of the existing building using point cloud data. This model would help the client with renovation, maintenance, and better facility management. Our team focused on capturing all the important architectural, structural, and MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing) elements with precision.
We used Autodesk ReCap to process and clean the point cloud data. The cleaned scans were then imported into Autodesk Revit, where our BIM experts created a detailed 3D model based on the actual site conditions. We also used Navisworks for model coordination and clash detection to ensure that all building systems worked together properly without conflicts. The model was created as per the required LOD (Level of Detail), following industry standards.
This project required close attention to detail because data centers are sensitive and technical facilities. Even a small error in the model could lead to issues during construction or maintenance. By using advanced BIM tools and workflows, we delivered a reliable, accurate model that the client can now use for future upgrades and planning.
Solutions
To complete the project successfully, we followed a step-by-step Scan to BIM process. First, we processed the point cloud using Autodesk ReCap to remove noise and align the scans. Then, we imported the data into Revit and started modeling all visible elements such as walls, doors, windows, HVAC systems, electrical panels, pipes, and cable trays. Using Navisworks, we checked for any clashes between systems and ensured proper coordination. Finally, we delivered a well-organized Revit model along with 2D floor plans and views that the client can use for facility operations and future design work.
